Authentic Urushi Maki-e Workshop
ABOUT OUR WORKSHOP
Try your hand at the traditional decorating technique for lacquerware called maki-e. Learn about urushi, its history, tapping method and the Wajima-nuri process and then under the guidance of a professional urushi artist, make your own unique piece which you can take home with you on the same day. Because we aim to give you an authentic experience, you will be using the same special blend of urushi, lacquered panels and skills as professional craftsmen; a rare insight into hidden Japanese culture.
Choose from one of many designs which you will use to build up your picture onto a pre-lacquered urushi panel. For a most enjoyable experience, we ask that you take your time and allow 2 hours to complete your piece. Most participants find that once they have started, that they don’t want to stop!
ABOUT URUSHI
Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture is the most famous town in Japan for fine lacquerware, a traditional artistic craft with roots that reach back over 9,000 years. The lacquerware produced here is made by a community of highly skilled craftsmen and is called Wajima-nuri. The main component of all genuine lacquerware is urushi, the sap of a tree only found in East Asia.
